Tehran: Tensions between the US and Iran show no signs of easing. US President Donald Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, threatened that if Iran attempted to assassinate him, the Islamic nation would be wiped off the face of the earth. Iran retaliated against Trump's statement, saying it would use every weapon at its disposal to defend itself.

What is US President Donald Trump up to?

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the US president has begun pressuring his allies to prepare for a "decisive" military option against Iran. Last week, Trump had promised Iranian protesters that help was on its way. However, he reportedly hesitated when informed that the US military was not yet fully prepared for an attack on Iran. Now, everything from US F-35 fighter jets to the THAAD air defense system has arrived in the Middle East.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, planning has begun in the US regarding decisive action against Iran. US military assets have now arrived in the Middle East. This includes two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers equipped with F-35 fighter jets, the THAAD air defense system, and numerous troops. Meanwhile, the White House has stated that Trump could still authorize an attack on Iran. Trump is continuously pressing his allies for "decisive" action against Iran.

What are the options before Donald Trump?

US officials are now considering limited strikes on Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets. Furthermore, the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in the Middle East. Despite this, Trump has not yet ordered an attack on Iran. Meanwhile, US officials believe that the number of deaths in the Iranian protests could be between 2,000 and 3,000. UN-affiliated organizations estimate that thousands of Iranians have been killed in the nationwide protests. Following Trump's threat, Iran canceled its decision to execute 837 protesters.

Former US military officials say that it is not possible to overthrow a foreign regime with only airstrikes. One former military official, Lieutenant General David Deptula, said that military options could change the Iranian regime's behavior to some extent, but a sufficient number of air and ground operations would be needed to bring about a regime change. Amidst the ongoing discussions in the US, the American military has strengthened its presence in the Middle East. US F-15E fighter jets have landed in Jordan, and a US aircraft carrier has also moved closer to Iran. The US has deployed THAAD and Patriot missiles in the region to strengthen its air defense system.

What has Iran said?

This deployment gives the US more options for attack. The US Secretary of State has spoken with the Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister regarding the Iran issue. Without Saudi Arabia's help, the US will not be able to sustain a military operation in Iran for long. Meanwhile, Iran has said that it will use every weapon at its disposal to defend itself. The Iranian Foreign Minister said that if the US attacks, his country will not exercise any restraint in retaliating. He also mocked Europe over the US threat regarding Greenland. It is worth noting that Iran is a superpower in terms of missiles and drones and has caused significant destruction in Israel. This has also put US military officials on edge.
